Tom Monaghan and his brother James Monaghan began their journey with limited resources. While Tom had a vision for a business, James worked as a postman. In 1960, Tom purchased a small pizza store near Eastern University named DomiNick’s for $500 as a down payment, borrowing $900 to finalize the purchase. Initially, the brothers planned to share responsibilities, but James chose to stay with his job.
As the business grew, Tom acquired two more stores and hired staff to manage pizza deliveries. However, due to trademark restrictions, the original name couldn’t be retained. An employee suggested the name “Domino’s,” which resonated with Tom’s vision for the brand. Renamed Domino’s Pizza Inc., the company rapidly expanded, opening thousands of restaurants and franchises worldwide. Today, Domino’s is synonymous with quality and innovation in the fast food industry.
